Commemoration: Remembering the Tunis Roundup (December 9, 1942)

History unfolds in a poignant gathering near the Jewish district, where we commemorate the tragic events of the 1942 Tunis roundup. This solemn occasion invites you to reflect on the stories often left out of our history books while honoring those affected. It is a vital moment of collective remembrance to ensure these past struggles remain part of our shared consciousness.

During this evening featuring speeches, readings, music, and a roundtable discussion, the Shoah Memorial pays tribute to Hélène Mouchard-Zay, a major figure in the memory of the Shoah, who with intelligence, audacity, and determination, worked tirelessly to transmit this history to the greatest number of people. Her greatest achievement will remain the creation in the early 1990s of the Center for Study and Research on the Internment Camps of the Loiret, the Cercil. Her fight to bring to light the history of the Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande camps, and to honor the memory of the children of the Vel d'Hiv, is intrinsically linked to her unwavering will to do justice to the memory of her father, Jean Zay, murdered by the Milice in June 1944.
