Follow the traces of the Judeo-Spanish community through the streets of the 11th arrondissement as history and fiction intertwine to paint a vivid picture of old Popincourt. From Balkan origins to the complexities of the 20th century, this walking tour brings a unique cultural heritage back to life. Join this exploration to see the neighborhood with fresh eyes and connect with the stories that shaped it.

About

Beginning at the end of the 19th century, this immigration from the Balkan Europe found its place in the Popincourt neighborhood. From Rue Sedaine to the synagogue on Rue de la Roquette, streets, shops, and cafes come back to life through the pen of Ariane Bois in Le Monde d’Hannah, inspired by the story of her Turkish Jewish mother. The tour is accompanied by excerpts from the book and allows us to specifically retrace the history of these Djudyos, from their settlement to the darker times of the persecutions during the Occupation.

At the end of the tour, the Memorial invites you to an exceptional meeting at the Shoah Memorial with Claudine Esther Barouhiel, author of the book Les Djudyos du 11e arrondissement de Paris, Éditions Glyphe, 2024.
