About

Nrityarpana is a dance offering in the language of Bharatanatyam. It celebrates and explores what it means to be human, journeying through life in its great moments of joy, separation, anguish, laughter, love, injury, and so much more.

In respect of tradition, the recital begins with an invocation of the remover of all obstacles, Ganesha.

The Varnam, or central piece for the offering, tells of Rama's deep anguish at being separated from his wife Sita. He yearns for her, not knowing where she is or what fate she faces.

Jagadodharana: Yashoda is unaware that her child is the one who, according to the people of Gokula, must save the Universe. How does she feel for this child? How does he save the World?

Madurashtakam: What about Krishna is not beautiful? His lips, his eyes, his face, his smile, his walk, his friends, his games, his dance, what about him is not beautiful...

Lakshmi Parthasarathy Athreya is a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher, dedicated to the practice for forty years, trained by the famous Chitra Visweswaran. Her creations blend traditional rigor, contemporary subjects, and her personal quest. Founder of the Pravaaha Centre, she now dedicates herself to transmitting her art.
