About
Choreographer Aina Alegre presents "FUGACES" at Chaillot - Théâtre national de la Danse, a dynamic performance inspired by the legacy of dancer Carmen Amaya. Blending contemporary movement with reimagined flamenco elements, the piece features a miniature brass band and a deconstructed version of Ravel's Boléro. This one-hour production is suitable for audiences aged 12 and up and is performed in the 16th arrondissement. Tickets are available from 17 to 42 euros. It is a powerful exploration of rhythm and memory, directed by the head of the Grenoble Choreographic Center, inviting spectators into a world of raw energy and artistic reinvention.
Carmen Amaya could only haunt the imagination of Aina Alegre, a prolific choreographer currently heading the Centre chorégraphique de Grenoble. But in Aina Alegre's work, nostalgia gives way to modernity, that of La Amaya—a gypsy woman whom Hollywood courted, a strong woman in a man's world, a myth against her will. FUGACES lives up to its title, a work playing with rhythm, summoning a miniature brass band on stage or unfolding a round, vest open on the chest or a skirt panel over trousers to keep certain flamenco folklore at a distance. More than once, the show draws us into a fiesta, the dancers subverting the typical flamenco floor strikes or arched poses. For Aina Alegre, Carmen Amaya is a "revenant," a kind of benevolent ghost guarding this production of wild energy. From Ravel's Bolero, here deconstructed, to the projected images of Carmen Amaya, everything here makes sense. And causes a sensation.

Our take on this event
Bridging the gap between the past and contemporary expression, Aina Alegre’s "FUGACES" reconsiders the iconic figure of Carmen Amaya through a modern lens. Rather than relying on traditional nostalgia, the choreography utilizes a high-energy approach, subverting standard flamenco postures and percussive footwork. The performance is enriched by a miniature live band and a striking, deconstructed arrangement of Ravel's Boléro, creating a sensory experience that feels both urgent and timeless.
