Workshop: Urban Chalks
Make urban chalks to get your messages across in a different way!
MAIF Social Club (Paris 3rd)
About
What if city walls became ephemeral spaces for expression? During this workshop, you will make your own chalks from a simple mixture of plaster, alum salt, and pigments, before giving them shapes and colors.
By handling the materials, you will discover the basics of a chemical transformation and understand how a powder becomes solid. Once ready, these chalks allow you to write, draw, and share messages in public spaces... before the rain washes them away.
An activity with Les Inventeurs at the crossroads of science and freedom of expression, to experience the city differently.
A 4-hand workshop to share between you and the child you are accompanying. Anyone attending the workshop must book a spot (children and accompanying adults).
Our take on this event
Turn grey city walls into a vibrant canvas with your very own handmade chalks. This hands-on session combines science and art, letting you create custom drawing tools before heading out to leave your marks on the neighborhood. It is the perfect creative getaway to enjoy with a child while reclaiming the urban landscape through color.
Turn the city streets into your canvas with the Craies urbaines workshop at the MAIF Social Club. Guided by the team from Les Inventeurs, you will craft your own custom chalks using a blend of plaster, alum salt, and pigments, before exploring their artistic potential. Designed for participants aged 8 and up, this creative session bridges the gap between scientific experimentation and public self-expression. Please be aware that this is a collaborative 4-hands workshop; consequently, every individual, including both children and their accompanying adults, must book their own place in advance to attend.
Located in the 3rd arrondissement, the MAIF Social Club hosts the Craies urbaines workshop from January 9, 2027, through July 21, 2027. This hands-on session invites you to dive into the science of materials by creating bespoke chalks. By mixing plaster, alum salt, and colorful pigments, you will witness how powders turn into solid tools for urban artistry.
This experience is more than just a craft class; it is an exploration of how public spaces can become temporary stages for creativity. Once your chalks are ready, you are encouraged to write or draw in the city, knowing that your work is transient and will eventually wash away. It is a unique opportunity to engage with the urban environment through a scientific and artistic lens.
The workshop is specifically structured as a 4-hands activity, meant to be shared between an adult and a child. Participation is open to anyone aged 8 and older. Because space is limited, it is mandatory for every person attending—whether child or adult—to make an individual reservation. The workshop is offered free of charge.
