Grosgrain Ribbon Creation Workshops with Sofía Bonilla Otoya at the Galerie du 19M

As part of the exhibition "Metamorphoses, the hats of Maison Michel" at the Galerie du 19M, Colombian artist Sofía Bonilla Otoya invites you to explore grosgrain ribbon through simple gestures: folding, twisting, knotting, and weaving. Traditionally associated with millinery, this material becomes a means to create shapes, volumes, and colorful compositions.

About

The program with Sofía Bonilla Otoya

Using grosgrain ribbons, participants create relief and play with colors. They draw inspiration from photographs of ornamental details observed in the north of Paris: ironwork, floral motifs, or architectural ornaments. Each person chooses a motif, reinterprets it, and then translates it into volume using ribbons.

Throughout the workshop, knots, flowers, and weaves appear, showing how the same material can give rise to numerous creations. Detached from its original decor, the form becomes a graphic, textile, and sculptural creation.

Participants take home their creation.

Sofía Bonilla Otoya - Artist

Sofía Bonilla Otoya is a Colombian artist living and working between Paris and Cali. Trained in art philosophy and aesthetics, and then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, she develops a transdisciplinary practice at the intersection of sculpture, installation, painted or dyed textiles, and video.

Language is the starting point of her work. Sentences, poetic licenses, and fictional hypotheses become possible spaces where matter extends thought and gives shape to parallel narratives.

Attentive to the movement of colors, shapes, and uses, Sofía Bonilla Otoya questions what is presented as self-evident. Ornament, writing, jewelry, accessory, or fabric then reveal the histories of transmission, industrialization, class, and power that permeate objects and imaginaries at the heart of her contemporary and sensitive body of work.
