Paris Against International Oligarchy

The explosion of extreme wealth and the concentration of economic, media, and technological power are profoundly transforming our societies. How can we fight against the secession of the ultra-rich? Preserve the independence of public debate? Turn knowledge and artificial intelligence into truly shared goods? These are all questions we will raise on November 21st at the Théâtre de la Concorde.

About

At the initiative of the EU Tax Observatory led by Gabriel Zucman, and with the support of the City of Paris, the first Paris Summit Against International Oligarchy brings together economists, researchers, policymakers, journalists, trade unionists, and activists from around the world at the Théâtre de la Concorde to compare their analyses and develop concrete paths for action.

Among the personalities gathered: Joseph Stiglitz, Esther Duflo, Paul Krugman, Gabriel Zucman, Jayati Ghosh, Pierre Rosanvallon, Isabella Weber, Naomi Klein, Sophie Binet, Abigail Disney, Marlene Engelhorn, and Gary Stevenson.

A space for debate and civic engagement, the Théâtre de la Concorde has welcomed those committed to enlivening democracy through dialogue and the sharing of knowledge since its opening. This first Summit Against International Oligarchy is fully in line with this approach, taking knowledge out of the lecture halls and inviting intellectuals, professors, Nobel laureates, journalists, and activists to fuel the debate and explore concrete paths against the concentration of power, knowledge, and wealth.

THREE MAJOR DEBATES AT THE HEART OF THE SUMMIT

The day is structured around three major debates dedicated to three areas at the heart of power concentration: artificial intelligence, to examine the ownership and sharing of knowledge; the media, to consider the conditions for an independent and pluralistic public space; and taxation, to explore ways to combat the extreme concentration of wealth.

Around these three highlights, the Summit occupies the entire theater with meeting-debates, screenings, exchanges with the public, a bookstore, and book signings.

From price regulation to investigative journalism, from philanthropy to the taxation of the largest fortunes, these meetings allow for a very concrete approach to the different forms that oligarchic power can take and the ways to respond to them.

The Summit is co-organized by the EU Tax Observatory, ICRICT, and the PSE Stone Center, with the support of the Théâtre de la Concorde and the City of Paris.
