Solo exhibition "Reliefs": Sophie Bloch

Sophie Bloch redefines the color blue, sculpting it into textured landscapes that bridge the gap between liquid waves and solid peaks. These paintings invite you to linger, as shifting perspectives reveal hidden forms buried within layers of vibrant cobalt and deep violet. A perfect visual escape for those who appreciate art that evolves the longer you look at it.

About

The LooLooLook Gallery presents "Reliefs," a solo exhibition by Sophie Bloch running from October 15 to November 22, 2026. Focusing on ultramarine blue, the artist explores how paint can transform into depth, landscape, and texture through her series titled "Vagues," "Ondes," "Mégalithes," and "Cimes." Visitors are invited to observe the subtle shifts in these oil paintings, where mountains and waves emerge from the canvas. Admission to the exhibition is free of charge, and the gallery is fully equipped to welcome visitors with sensory or cognitive disabilities.

Reliefs
October 15 — November 22, 2026

LooLooLook Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Sophie Bloch as part of Gallery Week, organized by the CPGA.

Between forms, a space of transformation

For her second solo exhibition at LooLooLook Gallery, following Bleu in 2023, Sophie Bloch presents Reliefs, a new stage in her research around ultramarine. For several years, the artist has explored blue as a space rather than a simple color. In her paintings, it hollows out, rises, and moves. The surface becomes the place of continuous movement, on the border between real and imagined landscapes.

The series Vagues (Waves), Ondes (Ripples), Mégalithes (Megaliths), and Cimes (Peaks) bear witness to this evolution. A liquid form can gradually become a mass, then a relief; what seemed to belong to the world of water ends up evoking the mountain. Depth becomes a ripple, the ripple becomes a wave, the wave becomes a mass, the mass becomes a peak. It is in this transformation that the meaning of the title Reliefs lies: a geographical relief, but also a relief of matter in echo with an inner depth.

In Sophie Bloch's work, the landscape does not precede the painting; it appears through it. The brush advances in the oil, leaves streaks, hollows out certain areas, and covers others. The gesture remains perceptible and gives the surface an almost tactile presence. Starting from ultramarine, the artist brings out a range of shades from deep blue to violet, from cobalt to black. Light then modifies this perception. Depending on where you stand in front of the canvas, certain forms appear while others disappear. A mountain may seem to emerge from a wave; a depth may open up in a surface previously thought to be flat. The works do not immediately reveal their landscape. They ask the gaze to take its time.

Our take on this event

Sophie Bloch returns to LooLooLook Gallery for her second solo exhibition, following her 2023 showcase. This new collection, "Reliefs," examines the potential of ultramarine blue as a structural element rather than just a pigment. Through a meticulous process of layering and brushing, Bloch creates surfaces where forms appear to shift, inviting the viewer to engage with the paintings from different angles to discover hidden depths and textures that evolve under changing light.

The series featured—"Vagues," "Ondes," "Mégalithes," and "Cimes"—document a progression where fluid shapes harden into solid masses, bridging the gap between imagined landscapes and physical reality. The exhibition officially opens on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with a vernissage held from 18:00 to 21:00, where the artist will be in attendance.

The exhibition remains open to the public until November 22, 2026. The gallery is committed to accessibility and is adapted for visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind or visually impaired, and those with cognitive disabilities. Aside from the standard free opening hours, private appointments can be arranged upon request for those wishing to view the unique artworks in a more intimate setting.
