Detailed program

Friday, October 2

Round table: Parisian women at work | 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

This round table will present the industrious Paris, a city of workshops populated by craftsmen and workers, but also by craftswomen and female workers. Women will be in the spotlight, excluded from certain trades to better shine in others, forced to work to avoid falling into poverty, or experts and recognized. By looking at a period ranging from the end of the Middle Ages to the French Revolution, the speakers will ask what work does to women and what, in return, they bring to the sphere of Parisian work.

Round table: Paris on stage | 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

The Parisian theatrical scene of the Belle Époque, in its teeming diversity, will be the subject of this round table. The Comédie-Française institution will enter into dialogue with the mind-blowing novelty of the Moulin Rouge and with the stories and acting methods of Yiddish troupes from Eastern Europe. Classical theater, operetta, music hall, cabaret, the plurality of genres and the multiplicity of creative spaces are all factors that made Paris's reputation as a great European, if not global, capital of spectacle. The invited researchers will review the history of these places and the actors and actresses who made Paris shine during the Belle Époque.
