About

Paris, capital of crime? Paris, a city for deviants and bandits, the undesirable and the dangerous? From the 18th century to the Belle Époque, this round table will examine Paris through its judicial and police sources to understand what they reveal about the surveillance of criminal populations, as well as how the criminal is constructed, according to the eras and contexts.

This round table is presented by the Hôtel de Ville Library as part of Paris Under the Lens, a festival for young research on Paris.

Program for this round table:

  • Roxane Bonnardel-Mira, Irregular arrivals: foreigners and mobility control in Paris 1880 - 1920, University of Tours.
  • Balthazar Dombret, Experiences of individual violence in Paris. Crossed perspectives of the police and the press, 1900-1932, Paris-Sorbonne University.
  • Timothée Marteau, The sentencing of the criminal minor by the Parliament of Paris in the 18th century, Paris-Panthéon-Assas University.

Moderator: Vincent Milliot, professor of Modern History, Paris 8 University.
