Paris à la loupe Festival: Round Table "The Greater Paris in its Neighborhoods"

Paris is far from a uniform grid, but rather a vibrant mosaic of village-like neighborhoods with deep, untold histories. Join this fascinating panel discussion to explore how urban policies and shifting populations have shaped the capital we know today. It is a rare chance to look beneath the surface and appreciate the city’s evolving character through a scholar's lens.

About

Far from being uniform, Paris is a heterogeneous collection of districts, neighborhoods, and villages. This round table aims to explore this plural identity through the triple scale of public action, local urban policies, and the adaptability of inhabitants. From the 18th century to the present day, from the Cité to Greater Paris, passing through Montparnasse, topics will include spatial planning, socio-urban movements, population control, social mix, and the political color of territories.

This round table is programmed as part of Paris à la loupe, the festival of young research on Paris, organized by the Musée Carnavalet – History of Paris, on the occasion of its 160th anniversary, in collaboration with the History Committee of the City of Paris, the Historical Library of the City of Paris, the Forney Library, the Hôtel de Ville Library, and the Archives of the City of Paris.

Program for this round table:

  • Adrien Duval, The transformations of the Montparnasse station district (1950s-1970s): a laboratory of Parisian urban modernity?, Gustave Eiffel University Paris.
  • Fatma Hachani, Urban space, powers, and society. The Cité district in Paris during the first half of the 18th century, Paris-Sorbonne University.
  • Matis Bloch, Villejuif, the red suburbs, and Greater Paris: the reconfigurations of municipal communism in a capital metropolis (20th–21st centuries), Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

Moderator: Pauline Rossi, head of archives, Commission for Old Paris, Department of History of Architecture and Archaeology of the City of Paris.
