Physical strength, a tool for emancipation?
Current Affairs Thursdays: meeting with Emilia Petrakis and Martin Page hosted by Lauren Malka
Médiathèque Edmond Rostand (Paris 17th)
This event has ended.
About
The development of physical strength is generally associated with the male gender. With the rise of the masculinist movement, this valorization of strength can be perceived negatively by gender minorities, who see it as the expression of values deemed violent or centered on self-worship. Bodybuilding, in particular, can thus be despised or criticized, as it is sometimes associated with a form of exaltation of physical domination, capable of being perceived as threatening. How can we reclaim this notion of physical strength and turn it into a tool for self-confidence, pride, and emancipation?
Speakers:
> Martin Page writes novels and essays. In Douceur de la musculation (2025), he offers an unexpected look at bodybuilding, a practice that allows us to take care of ourselves and our loved ones, while protecting our fragility and our gentleness. Bodybuilding becomes a laboratory of resistance against what hurts and oppresses us.
> Emilia Petrakis writes poetry and practices Mixed Martial Arts in amateur competition. With Bagarre (2026), her first novel, she delivers a sensitive and energetic reflection on emancipation through sport, and offers a moving tribute, far from clichés, to a little-known community. A timely text on willpower, solidarity, last chances, and first times.
> Lauren Malka is an author, freelance journalist, and podcaster.
