Lol Tolhurst in concert!

LOL TOLHURST

Lol Tolhurst is best known as one of the founding members of The Cure, one of the most influential, popular, and critically acclaimed bands of all time. This Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee has also distinguished himself in various musical projects, embarked on a writing career with the 2016 publication of his memoir titled “Cured - The Tale Of Two Imaginary Boys,” and co-created the “Curious Creatures” podcast.

Tolhurst met his childhood friend Robert Smith at age 5, at school in the London suburbs of West Sussex. They later founded The Cure in 1976, with Tolhurst on drums, and went on extensive world tours to promote their groundbreaking albums “Three Imaginary Boys,” “Seventeen Seconds,” “Faith,” and “Pornography.” Lol then switched to keyboards before leaving the band in 1989, after recording their masterpiece, “Disintegration.”

This artist of boundless creativity has since settled in Southern California, where he composed, recorded, and toured with his band, Levinhurst. Tolhurst also participated in a memorable reunion tour with The Cure in 2011, where they performed together for the first time in over twenty years. Tolhurst then wrote his first published book, “Cured - The Tale Of Two Imaginary Boys.” These globally acclaimed memoirs traced the path of his life and art to date.

Lol’s creative adventures have also continued recently after an unexpected meeting with his old friend Budgie, former member of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Creatures. In 2022, the two men teamed up to create the podcast series “Curious Creatures,” in which they explore the enduring legacy and contemporary relevance of post-punk and host personalities from all walks of life for insightful and casual conversations.

Tolhurst has again recorded new tracks, this time with Budgie and producer Jacknife Lee (U2, Taylor Swift). The debut album from Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee, titled “Los Angeles,” offers hard-hitting tracks that explore themes of freedom and enslavement, beauty and decay, as well as hope and despair. The album also features an impressive list of guest vocalists and musicians, including The Edge (U2), James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse), Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), avant-garde civil rights artist Lonnie Holley, Mary Lattimore, Starcrawler rebel Arrow de Wilde, Mark Bowen (IDLES), and many others. The album was released and followed by a US tour in late 2023, met with glowing reviews.

Tolhurst published his second book, “GOTH: A History,” also in the fall of 2023. This fascinating deep dive into the history of goth explores creative giants such as The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Joy Division, and other artists who provided a refuge for the outcasts of the 80s and ever since.
