About

The Mairie du 10e arrondissement hosts a solidarity evening for the LGBTI+ community in Turkey on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Following the crackdown on activists and associations in September, this event provides a platform to discuss the current human rights situation and support those on the ground. The gathering features insights from prominent figures including Yıldız Tar, Attila Dirim, and Pınar Selek. This free event, running from 19:00 to 21:00, is open to adults over 18 and is fully wheelchair accessible, offering a vital space for international solidarity and dialogue.

On the night of September 12, 2026, as part of the operation named "my family in safety" by the Turkish government, simultaneous raids were carried out in several cities in Turkey, in homes, association offices, and entertainment venues. These operations notably targeted seven LGBTI+ rights associations as well as two associations working in the field of HIV.

At the same time, a disinformation campaign against LGBTI+ associations and activists was launched. At least 162 people were taken into police custody: LGBTI+ and feminist activists, trans people, sex workers, lawyers, journalists, and members of civil society. At least 82 people were subsequently placed in detention, including founders of associations and members of their boards of directors.

The social media accounts of journalists, associations, and media outlets that reported on these operations or expressed their solidarity with LGBTI+ people were also censored.

These accusations show an intention to criminalize LGBTI+ people and to present as criminal the associative activities that are nonetheless legitimate and based on the defense of human rights.

One month after the start of these operations, we wish to continue international solidarity and give a voice to those who continue, in Turkey, to defend rights and freedoms.

This evening will be an opportunity to take stock of the current situation, listen to testimonies from people directly involved on the ground, and discuss the different forms of solidarity that we can continue to build.

More than ever, international solidarity is essential.

With the participation of:

.– Yıldız Tar, editor-in-chief of Kaos GL;
– Attila Dirim, president of the Ankara Rainbow Families Association;
– Pınar Selek, sociologist and writer

This evening is co-organized by ACORT, the Collectif Orta Şekerli and Inter- lgbt with the support of the 10th District Town Hall as part of the 10th Paris week against discrimination

Our take on this event

As part of the 10th Parisian week against discrimination, the Mairie du 10e hosts a significant solidarity event. Co-organized by ACORT, Collectif Orta Şekerli, and Inter-LGBT, the evening addresses the state-led operations in Turkey that have targeted LGBTI+ and HIV-focused associations. With numerous individuals currently in detention and the criminalization of legitimate human rights activism, this meeting serves as a crucial moment for international awareness.

The program includes direct testimonies and discussions on how to sustain support for activists in Turkey. Participants include Yıldız Tar, editor-in-chief of Kaos GL, Attila Dirim, president of the Ankara Rainbow Families Association, and sociologist and writer Pınar Selek. These speakers will provide an in-depth look at the current challenges and the ongoing fight for civil rights.

The event takes place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 19:00 to 21:00, at 72 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin. Admission is free, and the venue is wheelchair accessible. Please note that attendance is restricted to individuals aged 18 and over. Join this collective effort to stand in solidarity with those defending fundamental liberties in Turkey.
