About

«The whole duplicity of contemporary art is there: to claim nullity, insignificance, nonsense, to aim at nullity when one is already null. To aim at nonsense when one is already insignificant.»

On May 20, 1996, Jean Baudrillard published in Libération «The Conspiracy of Art», a polemical tribune that denounced the claimed nullity and the connivance of contemporary art with the market. According to him, art had lost its power of critical illusion to become nothing more than the staging of its own emptiness, accepted and celebrated by a complicit public. This stone in the pond created a shockwave and heated debates among artists, critics, and institutional figures of the time.

Thirty years later, during the full crisis of the art market, as financial speculation and digital proliferation are redefining the artistic landscape, the question remains burning: has contemporary art definitively dissolved into merchandise and insignificance?
