About

RESTER VIVANT
A film by Romain Multier and Colin Péguillan

Fred, in his sixties, lives in a tiny apartment in the Marais district of Paris. Suffering from psychological issues and extreme loneliness, he sets out to reconstruct the world of his childhood by scouring antique shops for books and toys. Passionate about the fallen angels of the 70s, he embarks on an eccentric investigation into the death of Jim Morrison, who died just a few steps from his home.

Beyond this dual quest, Rester vivant is the portrait of a man who invents a life for himself in order not to endure it. Known for thirty years in his neighborhood as “the mysterious man with the stride of a stilt-walker,” broadcasting his sound collages in the street on his portable tape recorder, Fred confided to the directors during their first meeting in 2020: “I haven't had visitors in my home for thirty years”…

The film traces his journey: a happy childhood broken by his father's sudden departure, years of depression and silence, and then his treatment at the Adamant, a day psychiatric hospital, where artistic workshops gradually help him emerge from his isolation.

A sensitive documentary that questions our perspective on difference, loneliness, and the place society offers to the most vulnerable.
