About

From October 13, 2026, to January 24, 2027, the Musée de Cluny hosts an exhibition dedicated to Nicolas Flamel. Moving beyond the popular image of an alchemist seeking the philosopher's stone, this showcase reveals the authentic life of a Parisian public scribe, philanthropist, and savvy real estate investor. Using his original tombstone and historical archives, the exhibition examines how a real historical figure was transformed into a legend long after his death. Located in the 5th arrondissement, the museum welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 09:30 to 17:45. Admission is paid, ranging from 12 to 14 euros.

The Cluny Museum preserves one of the most tangible traces of the existence of Nicolas Flamel: his tombstone. Around this epitaph and archival documents, a story of Flamel emerges: that of a public notary who was also a great donor to religious and charitable works and a shrewd real estate investor.

There is no mention of a philosopher's stone in these documents, and for good reason! The legend of Nicolas Flamel the alchemist was only born at the end of the 15th century, nearly 50 years after his death. Over the centuries, the rumor grew, and writings allegedly from his hand spread. And Nicolas Flamel soon became a source of inspiration for artists and creators from all walks of life, right up to the present day when popular culture has seized upon the character.

A figure of Parisian heritage, Nicolas Flamel still embodies the fascination with lost knowledge, the fringes of science, and the promises of the invisible. It is all these dimensions of the man and the legend that the exhibition questions.

Our take on this event

Nicolas Flamel is a cornerstone of Parisian history, yet his legacy is often obscured by the alchemical myths that emerged long after his passing. This exhibition at the Musée de Cluny, running from October 13, 2026, to January 24, 2027, bridges the gap between historical reality and the fictionalized alchemist. By presenting his authentic tombstone alongside primary source documents, the museum reveals a man who was primarily a public scribe and a dedicated contributor to charitable causes.

The narrative follows the evolution of his reputation, detailing how rumors and spurious writings created a legacy that persists in modern popular culture. The exhibit invites visitors to reflect on the nature of legends and our enduring fascination with the margins of science and the unknown.

Exhibition hours are 09:30 to 17:45, from Tuesday to Sunday. The venue is located in the 5th arrondissement, and ticket prices are set between 12 and 14 euros.
