Ida and Paul discover that they think and are quite amazed by it. They are two friends, naive and perhaps a little bit clownish too. They play with words, with thoughts, they go from surprise to surprise and it makes them very happy. And when there are two of you, thoughts can be shared. It allows you to move forward and it also makes you free... It is not entirely by chance that the title of the play echoes the famous text by the thinker Pascal; it is about embodying, with all the seriousness and joy that children are capable of, great philosophical questions. Sylvain Maurice has imagined a show for two actors and a musician with a simple setup, so that it can be installed anywhere and made accessible to all. Through the lively language of Nicolas Doutey, who writes his first text for young audiences here, theater becomes a field of exploration in the present...

Our take on this event
Ida and Paul are two naive yet playful characters who are surprised to realize they have the capacity to think. This production marks playwright Nicolas Doutey's first work for young audiences, transforming the stage into a vibrant philosophical playground. Accompanied by a musician, the two actors use language as a toy, exploring complex existential questions with the earnestness and glee typical of children. Through this lighthearted narrative, the play subtly references Pascal’s legacy while focusing on the theme of intellectual freedom.
Director Sylvain Maurice has opted for a minimalist technical setup, ensuring the performance is both portable and deeply engaging for everyone from 8 years old upwards. The production creates an immediate and present theatrical experience, turning abstract concepts into a shared journey. Performances are scheduled from 14/10/2026 to 17/10/2026 at the Théâtre de la Ville – Sarah Bernhardt.
Inclusivity is a priority for this run, featuring full accessibility for wheelchair users, as well as those who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, or visually impaired.
