About
As part of the Thursday Current Affairs series and in partnership with Courrier international
After the "pink tide" of the early 21st century, the subcontinent shifted significantly to the right in 2025-2026, following the return of Donald Trump to power in the United States. While the latter did not hesitate to interfere unabashedly in electoral processes, contributing to the victory of Javier Milei in Argentina's midterm elections, José Antonio Kast in Chile, Nasry Asfura in Honduras, and Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia, this turn primarily reflects a change in citizens' priorities who now demand order, security, and economic growth, thereby renouncing a certain rule of law. The claimed model is that of the authoritarian president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, who defeated the gangs by sacrificing democracy and the protection of human rights.
