About

The Canadian Cultural Centre hosts "Great Lakes – The Shared Horizon of Inland Seas," a photography exhibition by Robert Burley running from June 6 to November 13, 2026. Through this unique collection, the photographer documents the Great Lakes basin, a vital resource and home to millions of people across the Canada-U.S. border. These images explore the power of contemporary photography while capturing the grandeur and vulnerability of this massive ecosystem. The exhibition is free to attend and serves as a testament to the region's cultural and environmental significance. It is an invitation to witness a landscape often perceived as both soothing and unsettling.

Opening on June 6, 2026, as part of Nuit Blanche

Spanning the border between Canada and the United States, making it disappear into its colossal fluid mass, the Great Lakes basin brings together millions of inhabitants along its shores, including Indigenous people from numerous First Nations and tribes. An extraordinary surface freshwater resource (among the most important in the world); a place of circulation and exchange, commerce, work, leisure, travel, and meditation, but also of exploitation, danger, and vulnerability; this immense basin has been observed from the diversity of its shores by Robert Burley, one of the most important Canadian photographers of our time.

The artist presents here a corpus as unprecedented as it is exceptional, where the grandiose beauty of this elusive ensemble, sometimes soothing and sometimes unsettling, transforms into a reflection on the power of the contemporary image. Stripped of all anecdotal diversion, returning the Great Lakes to their primal grandeur, Robert Burley's photographs call out to the viewer like haunting sirens.

This project is labeled Bicentennial of Photography by the Ministry of Culture and is part of the official Bicentennial programming from September 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027.
