About

Espoir 18 invites you to a film screening and discussion of "Chocolat," inspired by the story of Rafael Padilla, a Black artist who made his mark on the entertainment world in France at the end of the 19th century.

The film retraces the journey of this exceptional artist, faced with racial prejudice, discrimination, and the hardships linked to his status in a society deeply marked by inequality.

Through this moving story, the film invites reflection on issues of racism, dignity, recognition, and respect for differences.

The screening will be an opportunity to engage in a dialogue about racial representations, stereotypes, and their evolution in our society.

Through this initiative, Espoir 18 wishes to use cinema as a tool for awareness, transmission, and dialogue.

A cultural and civic moment to better understand discrimination, question prejudices, and recall the importance of defending the values of equality, solidarity, and living together.

Our take on this event

Step back into the nineteenth century to uncover the compelling story of a circus icon who changed French performance history forever. This screening invites you to reflect on resilience and representation during a thoughtful discussion following the film.
