"DIRTY CLOSET" by Marianne Chargois

Forget conventional theatre and step into a raw, documentary-style performance that uncovers the hidden intersections of colonial history and contemporary sex work. Through a striking blend of soundscapes and storytelling, two performers confront their ancestry to question how our past shapes today's social struggles. It is an unapologetic, bold invitation to look at intimacy and justice through an entirely new lens.

About

As part of the 19th edition of the JERK OFF festival, taking place from October 1st to 10th, The Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles invites you to a theatrical evening to discover "DIRTY CLOSET" by Marianne Chargois.

Dirty Closets is a documentary performance addressing the theme of economic-sexual exchanges in a colonial context, the coming out of sex workers, and the needs for collective and historical reparations expressed therein. What if the actions and voices rising today were carrying more ancestral needs for justice resulting from yesterday's history?

Jamal Phoenix and Marianne Chargois, two contemporary sex workers, both have genealogical lineages that take root in countries colonized by France, in the Antilles and former Indochina. Between genealogical-biographical narrative and the surveying of minority life, the two performers attempt to respond to the silences of their history: caught in the stakes of gender, class, and race, what economic-sexual intimacies did their ancestors experience?

With the live presence of sound creator Mona Servo and visual artist Thy Truong Minh, Dirty Closets tells stories from the industrial colonial era of yesterday to the neo-colonial and neo-capitalist era of today.
