Speakers:

Pierre Baptiste (Guimet Museum), Chief Heritage Curator, Pierre Baptiste is Director of Collections and Conservation at the Guimet Museum. He was head of the Southeast Asian Art department from 1996 to 2024. Trained at the École du Louvre, this art historian is primarily devoted to the ancient arts of Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand, as well as the history of Asian art collections in France. As a curator of temporary exhibitions on these subjects, he teaches at the École du Louvre and the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, where he participates in a cooperation project on the renovation of the National Museum of Cambodia.

Claire-Akiko Brisset (University of Geneva), tenured professor at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Geneva. Her specialty is the cultural history of Japan. She is particularly interested in the relationships between text and image in the pre-modern and modern eras, the cultural anthropology of writing and painting, the relationships between text and orality in the pre-modern era, and Japanese cinema.

Catherine Cadou (interpreter-filmmaker), Japanese-English conference interpreter, Catherine Cadou has also translated short stories for the famous Gallimard anthologies and novels thanks to the opening of the publishing world in the 80s, but has also signed the subtitles for more than two hundred Japanese films, all released in theaters. After having been an interpreter for the Presidents of the French Republic and numerous Japanese Prime Ministers, she has translated all the Japanese filmmakers who have come to the Cannes Film Festival and has become their reference interpreter. Finally, she has directed three documentaries, including "Kurosawa the Path," which was selected at the Cannes Film Festival (Cannes Classics) in 2011. Subtitling is a passion that led her to filmmaking.

Jacqueline Pigeot (University of Paris 7), specialist in classical Japanese literature

Jean-Noël Robert (Collège de France), professor emeritus at the Collège de France, where he held the chair of Philology of Japanese Civilization (2011-2022), and also teaches at the EPHE. A specialist in Japanese Buddhism and the Tendai school, he devotes his research to the relationships between classical Chinese and Japanese in the intellectual history of Japan. Author of the concept of "hieroglossy," he is a member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres.

Christian Sautter (EHESS), resident of the Maison Franco-Japonaise (1971-72), director of studies at the EHESS on the Japanese economy (1976-), collaborator of President Mitterrand (state visit to Japan in 1982), vice-president of the France-Japan Foundation of the EHESS (2009-). Prefect of Île-de-France (1990-93), former Secretary of State for the Budget and then Minister of Economy and Finance (1997-2000).

◆The conference will be followed by the screening of the film The Ballad of Narayama by Shohei Imamura, based on the original work by Shichiro Fukazawa published in 1956 and translated into French by Bernard Frank in 1959 (Studies on the Songs of Narayama, Gallimard).
