The work of the German artist Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) charts a unique path within the art of the first half of the 20th century, founded on the collective experience of the destruction of war and the iconoclastic and plastic reinvention characteristic of the radical German scene of the 1920s and 1930s.
Painter, assembler, poet, musician, sculptor, typographer, magazine editor, and event organizer, this anarchist "one-man band" artist, whose work merges with his life, defies categories and appears irreducible to any attempt at classification. Schwitters, who initiated unprecedented collaborations with Dada and the constructivists, formulating his own Merz movement, is among the essential players in the geometric abstraction movement, participating in several historical exhibitions in Paris during the interwar period.
He is one of those creators who, like his contemporary Pablo Picasso or other figures of the Dada constellation, helped to radically redefine the boundaries of art. He conceived his works from refuse and debris transformed into "harmonious" matter and developed an organic architecture in corners and hollows within his own house, the Merzbau.
He also transposed the technique of collage into the realm of poetry, invented and performed the prodigious Ursonate, a sonata of primitive sounds, and created a magazine, advertising typographic slogans, assemblages, sculptures...

This exhibition examines the work of an artist who was as much a painter and sculptor as he was a poet, musician, and typographer. His contribution to the Dada and constructivist movements redefined the limits of art during the interwar period.
The showcase features his iconic Merz style, where discarded materials were reborn as harmonious structures, including his architectural experiments known as the Merzbau. Visitors will also explore his innovative approach to poetry and performance, such as the Ursonate, alongside his typographic and advertising projects.
