As part of Doc Month 2026 and the Counter-current theme, the Buffon Library invites you to the screening of the documentary film A Village in Resistance (France/Italy, 2023, 75 min) directed by Shu Aiello and Catherine Catella.
For 20 years, the depopulated small village of Riace in Calabria (Italy) made welcoming migrants its future. But the populists coming to power, led by Matteo Salvani, made Riace their target. Driven by the political world, the Italian justice system began prosecuting the village's mayor, Domenico Lucano, the victim of an unjust, pathetic, and often grotesque harassment.
In his descent into hell, Lucano is, however, never truly alone. On the contrary, he is increasingly surrounded. His fate is at stake, but his struggle is carried by civil society. The thread of resistance is never broken: it is present where the ideals of tolerance and inclusion survive against all odds; it is embodied in testimonies gathered here and there, those of residents, activists, and citizens that the film features in genuine moments of listening which, far from the incendiary fury of propagandist speeches, elevate the debate and often bring it back to the essential.
