After several unusual detours, here they are at last: The Homesick have become the kings of their own musical kingdom. The Dutch trio is no longer part of the young movement, but their quest for new sounds remains insatiable. On their upcoming fourth album, *What’s up with all these Shangri-La’s?*, to be released on Siluh Records, Jaap van der Velde, Elias Elgersma, and Erik Woudwijk have forged, across ten tracks, their own version of club music—highly inventive and endlessly fun.
Rejecting all dogmatism while remaining insatiably romantic, The Homesick’s pre-pandemic career was primarily characterized by concentrating countless flashes of inspiration into their mischievous anthems. Their debut album, *Youth Hunt*, and *The Big Exercise*—the album that saw their breakthrough on Sub Pop and featured more baroque inspiration—embodied the thirst for discovery of Van der Velde, Elgersma, and Woudwijk, exploring both the great elements of pop and free, unbridled experimentalism. During this formative phase, Woudwijk’s hyper-precise drumming was a pivotal force for this perpetually swinging pendulum, which in turn gave their music its angular traits.
The Homesick’s reputation as non-conformists remains intact with the exhilarating synth-pop march of "Horse Alone." The track doesn’t answer the question posed by the album: what about our obsession with heaven on earth? Given the trajectory The Homesick have followed so far, it’s a reflection that easily fades away. Throw away the manual, and never mind the sun or the moon… for there is a horizon ahead of us, and the next constellation awaits.
