The Man Without Qualities by Robert Musil was published in two parts, in 1930 and 1932. In this immense and unfinished work, the Austrian author examines with irony the decline of the semi-fictional empire of Kakania at the dawn of the 20th century, and through it, the inevitable failure of European culture on the eve of the First World War.
Julien Vella and the Groupe Caute have decided to bring this monumental novel to the stage, prioritizing the questions that permeate it over the plot: how to live in an era of profit, nationalism, and war? How can a young generation defy cynicism and nostalgia to invent its own language and resist the rot that threatens?
Like the book, which mixes genres—satire, narrative, essay, scholarly prose, and frantic metaphysics—they make fragments of song, dance, clowning, pantomime, and stand-up coexist in various scenes.
And like the novel, they stubbornly refuse to conclude. What is happening there is not the end of a world, but a resolute attempt to bring another one into being. Between irony and fervor, disaster and desire, the stage becomes a living laboratory where history, far from being finished, is written before our eyes—and invites us to take part.

From February 24 to March 5, 2027, the Théâtre de la Bastille presents La fin du monde est une idée sans avenir, a performance by Julien Vella and Groupe Caute. Drawing inspiration from Robert Musil's unfinished novel The Man Without Qualities, this work examines contemporary challenges including rising nationalism and social cynicism. Through a collage of dance, stand-up comedy, mime, and music, the performers explore how a generation can resist decay and create a new path forward. Please note that this performance is for adults only; attendees must be at least 18 years of age.
Julien Vella and Groupe Caute adapt Robert Musil’s vast, unfinished novel to the stage, moving away from plot-driven theatre to focus on the philosophical questions that haunt our times. The production asks how individuals can navigate an era dominated by profit and nationalistic tensions without succumbing to resignation or irony.
True to the spirit of the source material, the performance refuses to offer a tidy conclusion. Instead, it creates a living laboratory where different registers—from metaphysical prose to clowning and song—coexist. It is an invitation to witness history being rewritten in real-time, oscillating between the threat of collapse and the drive for renewal.
The show runs from Wednesday, February 24 to Friday, March 5, 2027, at the Théâtre de la Bastille in the 11th arrondissement. Performances are scheduled from 19:30 to 21:30 on weekdays (Monday through Friday) and from 17:00 to 19:00 on Saturdays. The event is ticketed and strictly for those aged 18 and over.
