Médiathèque James Baldwin (Paris 19th)

About

The James Baldwin Library hosts crochet workshops in the 19th arrondissement, offering a space for both beginners and experienced crafters to refine their skills. Participants can choose between thematic tables to work on collective projects, such as a community blanket, or focus on their own individual creations. This free event is inclusive and accessible to people with disabilities, including support in sign language. Please note that attendees are required to bring their own supplies, specifically yarn and crochet hooks sized between 3.5 and 5. Join fellow enthusiasts for a productive hour of textile crafting in a welcoming environment.

Come and learn the art of crochet, learn the basics or improve your skills, and chat about the art of crochet and its techniques during a friendly session.

The sessions alternate; some are led by librarians, while others are self-guided.

Bring your own materials, yarn, and crochet hooks! (size between 3.5 and 5 if possible)

Dates for the 2026 workshops, meeting at 4 PM:

- Saturday, September 12

- Saturday, September 26 - self-guided in the Practical Life area (ground floor)

- Saturday, October 10

- Saturday, October 24 - self-guided in the Practical Life area (ground floor)

- Saturday, November 14

- Saturday, November 28 - self-guided in the Practical Life area (ground floor)

- Saturday, December 12

- Saturday, December 26 - self-guided in the Practical Life area (ground floor)

This year, the workshops have a new format; each participant can choose a thematic table:

  • Squares (to continue the media library's collective blanket)
  • Leaves (for beginners)
  • Flowers (for experienced crafters)
  • Personal projects (to motivate you in pursuing your own creations)

Children who know the basics of crochet are accepted from age 10. For absolute beginners, from age 12. The workshops are open to all adults.

Our take on this event

These one-hour sessions take place on Saturdays from 16:00 to 17:00 at the James Baldwin Library. Depending on the date, workshops are either guided by librarians or held in a self-directed format within the ground-floor practical living area. The program is designed to accommodate different skill levels through specialized tables: squares for the collective blanket, leaves for beginners, flowers for advanced crafters, and a space for personal projects.

Participants must bring their own materials, including yarn and hooks between 3.5 and 5 mm. While the workshops are open to all adults, children are welcome starting at age 10 if they already know the basics, or age 12 for complete beginners.

The venue is wheelchair accessible and provides comprehensive support for attendees who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired, or have cognitive disabilities, with sign language services available. Admission is free, making this a perfect opportunity to engage with the local craft community.
