Philosophy for the Family – Do clothes have power?
Your favorite hoodie is more than just a piece of fabric; it is a statement waiting to be explored. Bring the whole family to dive into a philosophical conversation about what our style reveals, masks, or defines about our personality. It is the perfect chance to trade screen time for thoughtful debate on the hidden power of clothes.
Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris 4th)
About
The Maison Européenne de la Photographie hosts a family philosophy workshop on Saturday, December 5, 2026, exploring the power of clothing. Designed for children aged 7 and up alongside their parents, this session draws inspiration from the current PENN & FASHION and Vêtement du quotidien exhibitions. From 14:00 to 16:00, facilitator Marine Lemaire encourages participants to discuss how fashion influences identity and social perception. Please be aware that advance booking is mandatory, as the group size is strictly limited to 15 participants to ensure an intimate and constructive dialogue for everyone involved.
After exploring the PENN & FASHION and Everyday Clothing exhibitions on their own, parents and children are invited to come together to take the time to express their ideas, exchange views, and listen to one another in a friendly atmosphere.
Can clothing transform us? Can it protect us, reveal us, help us fit into a group... or, conversely, prevent us from being ourselves? Can clothing be a way to exert power? What do uniforms, dress codes, or imposed clothing tell us? And how can getting dressed become a way to assert one's freedom, identity, or send a message?
Using the works presented in the exhibitions as a starting point, parents and children will reflect together on what our clothes say about us, our relationship with others, and the society we live in.

Marine Lemaire is a graduate of the Caen School of Fine Arts and Media and is trained as a facilitator in the design and management of philosophical workshops for children and adolescents at the University of Nantes. A radio host, she is also the creator of podcasts, including La Morsure de Socrate, where children engage in philosophy. She believes in philosophy as an educational foundation for intercultural dialogue and social transformation. Children have a great capacity to question the world; giving them the opportunity to do so is essential to enable them to build a self, to coexist, to cooperate, and to become aware of a diverse world.
Our take on this event
On December 5, 2026, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie invites families with children aged 7 and older to engage in a unique philosophical discussion. The event begins with a self-guided exploration of the PENN & FASHION and Vêtement du quotidien exhibitions, followed by a 1.5-hour workshop running from 14:30 to 16:00.
Guided by Marine Lemaire, an experienced facilitator in youth philosophy, participants will contemplate the hidden meanings behind what we wear. Through open dialogue, families will examine how clothing can act as a shield, a tool for social inclusion, or a medium for self-expression. The session aims to foster deeper understanding of how our choices in attire reflect our personal identity and interactions within society.
Attendance is priced at 15 € for adults and 5 € for children. As the event is limited to a maximum of 15 participants, booking in advance is required to secure your place.
