About

One summer, Pierre Boisson discovered an abandoned novel in a library, forgotten on the second row, invisible: Écarlate, by Christine Pawlowska. A small work of about a hundred pages, published in 1974 by Mercure de France. A text written by a teenager whose violent vulnerability and incandescent pen struck the journalist and overwhelmed him with questions. Who is Christine Pawlowska? How did she live? What became of her? Did she continue writing? So many mysteries that a brief Internet search does not allow one to elucidate, on the contrary, because Christine Pawlowska has disappeared. Yet her work, even if consisting of only one book, seems to have mattered.

Drawing on archives, found correspondence, and precious testimonies, Pierre Boisson conducts an investigation and brings back to life the romantic and intimate journey of this forgotten writer in his book Flamme, volcan, tempête. Un portrait de Christine Pawlowska published by Editions du sous-sol in 2025. A captivating, vibrant, and deeply moving narrative.

Interviewed by Maëlle Venneuguès (Aimé Césaire Library) and Lisa Noel (Benoîte Groult Library), Pierre Boisson will reveal all the secrets of Christine Pawlowska's work and the fascinating history of his book.
