About

The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris presents a retrospective exhibition dedicated to photographer Jean-François Bauret from October 2, 2026, to January 3, 2027. This collection highlights intimate portraits of artists captured in their studios and private spaces, all of whom have works represented in the museum’s permanent collection. Admission to this exhibition is free, and the venue is fully accessible to all visitors, including those with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities, with sign language support available. Explore this historical photographic journey from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, in the heart of the 16th arrondissement.

At the beginning of his career, starting in 1959, he also photographed numerous artists, whether famous or unknown to the general public, in their homes or studios. In doing so, he captured moments of intimacy with the same sense of composition and the same desire to show "the individual as they are."

Some portraits reflect more assertive formal explorations, as in the series dedicated to the painter Geneviève Asse, while in others, brushes or palettes replace the artist and embody them. The portraits presented in this room all show artists whose work is represented in the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris.

Jean-François Bauret's work was first presented at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in 1971 during a monographic exhibition organized by the ARC (Animation – Recherche – Confrontation) section.

The current hanging follows the generous donation of 80 prints to the museum by Madame Claude Bauret Allard in 2017.

Our take on this event

Beginning his career in 1959, Jean-François Bauret focused on capturing artists in their most natural state, whether at home or in their workspaces. His work reflects a unique ability to reveal the individual behind the art, sometimes focusing on the tools of the trade—like brushes and palettes—to embody the creator’s presence. All artists featured in this selection have works preserved within the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris collections.

This exhibition follows a generous donation of 80 prints made by Claude Bauret Allard in 2017. It marks a significant return to the museum, which previously hosted a monographic exhibition of his work in 1971 through the ARC department. The museum ensures a welcoming environment for everyone, featuring wheelchair accessibility and specific accommodations for deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, visually impaired, or cognitively impaired visitors, including sign language services.

The exhibition is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and concludes on January 3, 2027. Entry is free of charge.
