About
On Thursday, October 15, 2026, head to the Centre Paris Anim' Place des Fêtes for the screening of Indomptables, a documentary chronicling the history of the Mujeres Libres movement. From 19:00 to 22:00, explore the lives of the women who fought for emancipation within the Spanish Republican struggle. This event, which highlights the legacy of activists like Lucía Sánchez Saornil, offers a deep dive into an anti-capitalist and humanist movement. The screening is free to attend and the venue is fully accessible to wheelchair users, ensuring an inclusive experience for all history enthusiasts interested in these influential figures.
In Madrid, in April 1936 Lucía Sánchez, Saornil, Amparo Poch y Gascón, Mercedes Comaposada Guillén and Consuelo Berges created the magazine of the same name for the libertarian movement Mujeres libres (MMLL). The Madrid group joined forces with the Catalan group Cultural femenino, based in Barcelona, and together they founded the Mujeres libres federation, which would spread throughout republican Spain.
They participated in the fight against the coup-plotting military while claiming the right to shape their own destiny. They advocated for a humanist and anticapitalist society. Whether factory workers, mothers, or sex workers, they fought for their emancipation. After the war, they continued their commitment, rebuilding their organization in exile.
The screening will be followed by a debate moderated by Hélène Hernandez, author and host of the program Femmes libres on Radio Libertaire.

The film Indomptables explores the origins of the Mujeres Libres movement, established in April 1936 by pioneers Lucía Sánchez Saornil, Amparo Poch y Gascón, Mercedes Comaposada Guillén, and Consuelo Berges. By bridging groups from Madrid and Barcelona, these women organized a federation that spread throughout the Spanish Republic. The documentary captures their dual struggle: resisting military insurgents while actively shaping their own destiny. Whether working-class women, mothers, or sex workers, these figures fought relentlessly for autonomy, a commitment that continued even after the war during their years in exile.
The event takes place on October 15, 2026, at the Centre Paris Anim' Place des Fêtes in the 19th arrondissement. Doors are open from 19:00 until 22:00. Following the screening, attendees can join a discussion led by Hélène Hernandez, author and host of the Femmes Libres program on Radio Libertaire. Admission is free, and the venue provides full accessibility for wheelchair users.
