About

The Birgit Ensemble returns to La Maison des Métallos for the seventh edition of their political cabaret. Combining satire and burlesque, this live performance dissects current events through sketches, songs, and audience interaction. Performed by a group of four actresses/singers, two masters of ceremony, and two musicians, this show is suitable for audiences aged 15 and over. The venue is fully accessible to wheelchair users, and specific accommodations are available for blind or visually impaired guests, including a tactile stage tour on April 2.

The company invents a free-form and resolutely lively style, written according to current events. Carried by four actresses and singers, two masters of ceremony, and two musicians, this seventh installment is part of the tradition of "documented" theater, where reality is observed and transformed to be better staged. Sketches, songs, and audience interaction follow one another. From fiery meetings to the hushed corridors of power, the performers humorously and sharply capture the whole little political theater: figures, tics, postures, contradictions, and arguments are revealed with acuity.

The Birgit Ensemble thus sketches a sensitive and subjective portrait of our time, between burlesque and satire. Laughter becomes a shared space to look reality in the face—a clever mix of provocation, lucidity, and fantasy at the service of a joyous session of collective catharsis.

The Maison des Métallos, in partnership with Peuple & Culture, invites you to a "surveying" workshop around the book On ne peut plus rien dire. Liberté d’expression : le grand détournement by Thomas Hochmann, published by Éditions Anamosa in March 2025.

To hear most political leaders, to make the far right recede, it would be enough to take good measures and improve people's lives. They are sorely mistaken. Although essential and necessary, the content of the policies pursued seems to matter much less than how they are presented and commented on; the best policy in the world carries little weight against the widespread dissemination of remarks that manipulate facts, sow division, and encourage discrimination. The urgency is therefore to finally protect the essential condition of any democracy: the free discussion of public affairs, in respect for others, and on a shared factual basis.

Through an incredible reversal, any effort to protect democratic debate is today mocked as an attack on "freedom of expression." As soon as a champion of the "national" camp is sanctioned, or even as soon as they are contradicted a little sharply, they lament: "You can't say anything anymore..." This complaint of the newly censored stretches all day long on television sets. Any contradiction is denounced as an aggression, the fight against racism is presented as a mark of "woke" intolerance. Let a judge timidly dare to point out that a news channel cannot exclusively devote its airwaves to far-right propaganda, and a wave of indignation immediately surges against "censorship," this "symbolic guillotine."

Yet, hatred and lies seriously harm democratic deliberation. This is why restrictions on public expression, far from being in contradiction with freedom of expression, are consubstantial to it.

The "freedom of expression" brandished by reactionary currents, which covers all manipulations and aggressions, is a trap. True freedom of expression is exercised within a framework that excludes, in particular, all hate speech, without ever hindering public debate.

In a lively style accessible to all, this book reveals how the far right has seized freedom of expression to better subvert it. Faced with the mountain of books that denounce wokeness and censorship, it shows how to reclaim this fundamental freedom, after having recalled and defended, with examples to support it, the laws that prohibit hate speech and disinformation campaigns. Because their implementation now constitutes our only and last chance to push back the far right.
