Hailing from the north of England, The Lilacs are an indie band bursting with energy from Wigan. In just a few years, the band has gone from local favorites to a national phenomenon, cementing their reputation with a monumental sold-out show at Manchester Academy 1 on November 22, 2025.
With tens of thousands of listeners on Spotify and millions of streams worldwide, the band has become an airwaves staple, from BBC Radio 1 and Radio X to their local champions at XS Manchester. Their debut single, “Vicarage Road,” remains an anthem of the scene, now featured on thousands of curated playlists and serving as the catalyst for their rise.
Born from a deep friendship forged in a previous band, Ollie Anglesea (vocals) and Sam Birchall (lead guitar) developed a desire to create their own legacy. The lineup was completed in October 2018 with the arrival of Dave Gomersall (drums) and Matt Johnson (bass).
The band's name holds profound significance. It is inspired by the Lilac Centre, a specialist cancer center where Sam's mother was treated during her battle with metastatic breast cancer. After her passing, the “lads” felt that this name was a tribute they simply could not ignore.
